Economic means required for Entry, Stay, and Residence in Spain

​​Economic Means for the Year 2026

A. ENTRY AND STAY OF LESS THAN 90 DAYS, INCLUDING EXTENSIONS UP TO 90 DAYS

1. WHEN A SCHENGEN VISA​It opens in new windowIS REQUIRED (nationals of third countries included in Annex IIt opens in new window of Regulation (EU) 2018/1806)​

  • ​​a) To cover their subsistence during their stay in Spain, applicants must demonstrate an amount of CAN $197.40 per person per day, or its legal equivalent in foreign currency, multiplied by the number of days they intend to stay in Spain and by the number of persons traveling under the applicant’s responsibility.
  • b) In all cases, applicants must demonstrate a minimum of CAN $1,776.60 (or its legal equivalent in foreign currency) per person, regardless of the intended length of stay.
  • c) To return to the country of origin or to travel in transit to third countries, foreign nationals may be required to show nominative, non-transferable, closed travel tickets for the means of transport they intend to use.
2. WHEN A SCHENGEN VISA IS NOT REQUIRED (nationals of third countries included in Annex IIIt opens in new window of Regulation (EU) 2018/1806). Canada is included in Annex II and, therefore, Canadian citizens do not need a Schengen Visa.

  • ​​a) At the border, they may be required to provide proof of the financial means indicated in points 1.a), 1.b) and 1.c) above.​

B. STUDENT VISAIt opens in new window, STUDENT MOBILITYIt opens in new window, VOLUNTEER SERVICES​It opens in new window, TRAINING ACTIVITIES​It opens in new window, AND LANGUAGE ASSISTANT (NALCAP VISA)​ FOR STAYS OF MORE THAN 90 DAYS

  • ​​​​​​​Applicants must demonstrate financial means of CAN $970.00 per month (or its legal equivalent in foreign currency) for their subsistence in Spain, unless they duly prove that accommodation has been fully paid in advance for the entire duration of the stay.
    • For the subsistence of dependent family members: 
      • CAN $727.50 per month for the first dependent. 
      • CAN $485.00 per month for each additional family member (or the legal equivalent in foreign currency), unless it is duly proven that accommodation has been prepaid for the entire duration of the stay.​
  • For participation in a student mobility program to undertake secondary and/or high school studies at an officially recognized educational or scientific institution, the financial requirement mentioned above will be replaced by the provisions of the program itself, provided that the program guarantees the foreign student’s full subsistence.
  • For the Language Assistant (NALCAP) Visa, if accommodation is prepaid, the required amount is reduced. Additionally, the grant from the Regional Education Authority will contribute toward covering the required monthly amount.

C. YOUTH MOBILITY VISAS BETWEEN SPAIN AND CANADA​It opens in new window

Applicants must demonstrate possession of more than CAN $2,910.00 (or its legal equivalent in foreign currency) to cover expenses for the first three months in Spain.

D.  NON-LUCRATIVE RESIDENCE VISA​It opens in new window ​AND LONG-TERM RESIDENCE OR EU LONG-TERM RESIDENCE RECOVERY VISA​​It opens in new window

  • a) ​​For their own subsistence during residence in Spain, applicants must demonstrate CAN $3,880.00 per month (or its legal equivalent in foreign currency).
    • For each dependent family member, applicants must demonstrate an additional CAN $970.00 per month (or its legal equivalent in foreign currency), in addition to the amount indicated in point a).

E. ECONOMIC REQUIREMENTS UNDER LAW 14/2013 OF 27 SEPTEMBER ON SUPPORT FOR ENTREPRENEURS AND THEIR INTERNATIONALIZATION

  • ​​Entrepreneur VisaIt opens in new window: Applicants must demonstrate CAN $970.00 per month (or its legal equivalent).
    • ​For their family members:
      • Family unit consisting of the principal applicant and one dependent: CAN $1,455.00 (or its legal equivalent)
      • Family unit of the principal applicant with more than two dependents: CAN $485.00 per additional member (or its legal equivalent)​
  • ​​​Audiovisual Sector VisaApplicants must demonstrate CAN $970.00 per month (or its legal equivalent).
    • For their family members:
      • Family unit consisting of the principal applicant and one dependent: CAN $1,455.00 (or its legal equivalent)
      • Family unit with more than two dependents: an additional CAN $485.00 per additional member (or its legalequivalent)

F. NO DOCUMENTATION OF FINANCIAL MEANS IS REQUIRED FOR THE FOLLOWING VISAS:
